Students protest over anti-Islamic film at US Embassy in Islamabad | Mobs of students and others entered the high security Diplomatic Enclave in the Pakistan capital in Islamabad on Thursday to protest against an anti-Islam film produced in the United States. The federal government had to summon the
army to prevent close to 3,000 angry protesters from entering the Diplomatic Enclave.
However, the protesters managed to reach the U.S. Embassy, which is just a kilometre
away from the entrance of the Diplomatic Enclave. According to a Express News
report, the protesters were present at the gate of the enclave, and had managed
to break through, causing chaos in the area. There was also a report of a police
station being set on fire. Television channels in India , however, reported that
the Indian High Commission and its staff were safe, and no harm had come to anyone,
or the building. There were reports of police firing live rounds of ammunition
and tear gas to break up a crowd of students, many armed with wooden clubs. The
crudely made film titled Innocence of Muslims has triggered protests in at least
20 countries since excerpts were posted online, and more than 30 people have been
killed in violence linked to the film. There have been dozens of protests around
Pakistan over the past week and at least two people have been killed, but Thursday
is the first time protests in the capital have turned violent.
