Pakistan has started building an indigenous drone system. The US has been pushing Pakistan for years to carry out a military offensive in the tribal area of North Waziristan against the Haqqani network, who have launched some of the most deadly attacks on the US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan, reports The News. Pakistan's inaction to do so has compelled the US launch drone attacks in the restive region. Despite Islamabad's repeated protests, the Obama administration has not been willing to halt the CIA drone campaign in the tribal areas. Washington insists they are necessary to target rebels in the lawless region, considered largely beyond the effective control of the Pakistani security forces. According to a report by the American Security Project, a U.S. think-tank, since 2004 the U.S. had launched a total of 336 drone strikes in Pakistan , killing between 2,532 and 3,251 people.
