Diesel price hike, FDI in retail anti-people measures: Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati on Saturday described the recent diesel price hike and the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reforms announced by the Central Government as “anti-people” measures. “In the past 2-3 days, the government has taken some decisions which are against the interests of the people. The prices of other commodities will increase as diesel prices have increased. We also condemn the implementation of FDI. We had opposed it earlier and we will oppose it now as well,” Mayawati told media here. She further said that whenever the Central government takes anti-people decisions, her party has not tolerated it and raised voice against it. She said that a huge rally would be held on October 9 after which a decision will be taken whether or not BSP will continue with its outside support to the government. Earlier in a statement, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said that the Cabinet has taken many decisions to bolster economic growth and make India a more attractive destination for foreign investment. “ I believe that these steps will help strengthen our growth process and generate employment in these difficult times. I urge all segments of public opinion to support the steps we have taken in national interest,” he added. The Union Cabinet on Friday decided to operationalise 51 percent FDI in multi-brand retail, but left it to the state governments to allow setting up of such stores. The government had in November last year approved 51 percent FDI in multi-brand. This was, however, put on hold due to political opposition, including from UPA constituent Trinamool Congress.
