Harlem Désir is first Black man to lead Socialists in Europe | French politician Harlem Désir will become the first black man to lead a major European political party. Désir, 52, was named as the official choice of the hierarchy of the French Socialist
party to replace Martine Aubry as its 'national leader'. Desir's nomination, which
was announced in a statement by Aubry and Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, sparked
scathing reactions from opposition parties, the Daily Mail reports. According
to the report, the far-right National Front led the charge, calling Desir an 'ex-convict'.
Desir was fined and given an 18-month suspended jail term in 1998 for taking an
illicit payment from an organisation that provided immigrants with professional
training. |
