Anti-US sentiments in Egypt after anti-Islam film | Muslims have held mass protests in Egypt against the anti-Islam movie made in the United States mocking Prophet Mohammad. Following the protests outside the US embassy in Cairo, President Barack Obama talked to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi on phone and said that the US rejects all efforts to denigrate Islam, adding that there is ‘never any justification for violence’. According to CBS News, protesters have become rioters fighting with the Egyptian police, who were out in force to stop them. On Thursday, more chaos was reported in Egypt, as young men threw stones
and Molotov cocktails, while security forces countered with tear gas. Dr. Wisam Abd el-Wares, a businessman and ultra conservative Muslim, led the earliest protests,
but said that he never wanted the demonstrations to turn violent, and has now called for them to end. According to the report, when Wares was told that the film was a low-budget effort, made by a handful of people, and doesn't express the beliefs of a majority of Americans, he said: “It doesn't matter if only a few people saw the film. Any insult to the Prophet Mohammad is unacceptable”.
More than 48 hours after the protests began, Morsi vowed to protect foreign embassies, but he also denounced those who insulted the Prophet Muhammad, the report said.
It was a show of unity with the Islamists who support him, and a clear sign of how Egypt’s relationship with America is changing, the report added. |
