White House on Obama's Egypt statement | The White House has clarified the meaning of a statement given by President Barack. Obama said suggesting America does not currently consider Egypt to be an ally or an enemy. "You He had said we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider
them an enemy. Obama had said in an interview with Telemundo, "They are a new
government trying to find its way, they were democratically elected. I think we
are going to have to see how they respond to this incident, to see how they respond
to maintaining the peace treaty with Israel," he added. His comments also came
after the storming of the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which killed the
US ambassador on Tuesday night. According to ABC News, White House aides carefully
clarified Obama's remarks. "Ally' is a legal term of art. We don't have a mutual
defense treaty with Egypt like we do with our NATO allies," the report quoted
White House National Security Council spokesman, Tommy Vietor, as saying. "But
as the President has said, Egypt is long-standing and close partner of the United
States, and we have built on that foundation by supporting Egypt's transition
to democracy and working with the new government," he added.
