Most Americans back diplomatic solution to Iran crisis

More and more Americans are looking for a diplomatic solution to the crisis between the West and the Muslim world. They hope both are able to find common ground, a new survey about America's public opinion has revealed. According to the 2012 edition of Foreign Policy in the New Millennium survey, a growing majority of Americans do not see a fundamental conflict between Islam and the West with 53 per cent saying that "because most Muslims are like people everywhere, we can find common ground, and violent conflict between the civilisations is not inevitable." A majority of 80 percent Americans preferred an approach to ending the Iranian 'nuclear programme' threat while 70 percent approved of continuing diplomatic efforts to get Iran to stop enriching uranium, the survey showed. Another 67 percent of Americans claimed that the US should be willing to meet and talk with Iranian leaders, the Gulf News reports. With U.S. combat troops scheduled to withdraw from Afghanistan by 2014 and with the departure from Iraq already complete, the 2012 edition of Foreign Policy in the New Millennium survey shows that a majority of Americans claimed that neither war was worth fighting, with 67 percent saying 'not worth it' as opposed to the 32 percent, who believe its 'worth it'. The survey found that "given the difficulty and cost in lives and treasure of reshaping events in far-off places and the bruising impact of the financial crisis and its aftermath, Americans have become increasingly selective about how and where to engage in the world".
