One held in Melbourne for links to Islamist terrorists | In a raid of several properties across Melbourne, the Australian police arrested one man for alleged links with homegrown Islamist terrorists. Sources said that the joint Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police raids, called Operation Astley, were connected with activities at the al Furqan centre in Springvale. According to the Age, a search warrant for the Al Furqan centre said that the police are looking for material related to 11 people between the ages of 22 and 40. The warrant also said that the police are looking for copies of al Qaeda-produced magazine Inspire, which reportedly selected Sydney as a potential terror target earlier this year. According to the report, the warrant said that the material police are searching for are either connected with terrorist acts or ‘the collecting and making of documents that are likely to facilitate terrorist acts’. The al Furqan centre, which also hosts a book shop, is associated with fringe Muslim preacher Sheikh Haron, who is believed to be overseas. The source said the people selected for the operation were not believed to have been involved in a fully realized terror plot, but were involved in ‘contemplating and getting information’ about terrorist activities. The police are questioning the man held for more details of the plot. According to the report, it is believed that authorities carried out the raids after getting information from individuals from Melbourne ’s Islamic community. |
