Murray wins maiden Grand Slam, beat Djokovic in epic US Open

British tennis star Andy Murray has won his maiden Grand Slam title beating US Open defending champion Novak Djokovic 7-6 (12/10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 in a five-set thriller in the final. At the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday, Murray became Britain's first major champion since Fred Perry claimed his third American title in 1936. In a gripping final, which included a 54-shot rally, numerous 30-stroke exchanges and a record-setting tiebreaker, the Scot held his nerve in a breathtaking final set. The Olympic champion led 3-0 in the deciding set, and then he was broken, but clawed back in the game after he broke again for 5-2 when Djokovic called a medical time-out, News.com.au reports. But Murray wasn't to be denied, taking the famous crown when Djokovic went long with a forehand on a second match point in what was, at four hours and 54 minutes, the equal-longest US Open final of all time. Previously, Murray had lost all of his four grand slam finals to Roger Federer at the US Open in 2008, the 2010 Australian Open and this year's Wimbledon, as well as to Djokovic in Australia in 2011. This was Murray 's 24th career title and his win deprived Djokovic the chance to claim the biggest payday in the history of the sport, 2.9 million dollars for winning the trophy as well as having the best record in the lead-up tournaments. An overwhelmed Murray praised his coach Ivan Lendl during his speech after winning the US Open final. "He's one of the greatest players ever, he made eight consecutive finals here," Murray said of Lendl in his acceptance speech. "Having him here supporting me has helped in the tough moments. But it's not only him - everyone else too. They've been there since the start, thanks very much," he added.
