Sarabjit Singh's sister jubilant after hearing brother will be released |
Jalandhar: Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner on death row in Pakistan, on Sunday said she is ecstatic to learn that her brother could be released soon. Kaur said speculations about the early release of her brother were welcome, and she thanked Pakistan's interior minister Rehman Malik and India's Foreign Minister SM Krishna for their efforts. "As I also came to know through the media that the respected interior minister of Pakistan, Rehman Malik, has indicated that he would try to release Sarabjit as soon as possible, and that the government is working on it. We were really jubilant on hearing this news, and, our confidence increased. I would really like to thank Rehman Malikji for his constant efforts, and for understanding our pain, and to S.M. Krishna. Hope, he has a long and healthy life ahead," said Kaur. On September 8, Krishna, who is visiting Pakistan, said that President Asif Ali Zardari had told him that Islamabad, would look into the case of Sarabjit Singh. He said that India was asking for the case to be considered on humanitarian grounds. Sarabjit, 49, who has spent 21 years on death row, is currently being held at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail. Sarabjit, who was condemned to death for his involvement in a string of bombings in Punjab in 1990, had earlier last month filed a fresh clemency appeal to President Zardari.
