Air India's first Dreamliner arrives

National carrier Air India has got its maiden Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The first in the series of 27 flying machines procured by Air India will operate on short and medium haul routes for the first few weeks for the crew, who are already trained to fly it, to practice more landings and take-offs. The new 256-seater aircraft, made out of light-weight carbon composite materials, would be flown on routes like Delhi-Dubai on the international sector, and Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi -Bangalore and Delhi-Amritsar in local sector. The flights on these short and medium haul routes would be undertaken till October-November. So far, 65 pilots have been trained to fly this plane. Thereafter, the Boeing 787s would be deployed on the new long-haul routes to Australia, Europe, Japan and the US. The landing of first Dreamliner will be followed by two more aircrafts out of Boeing facility in Charleston, South Carolina in the US in the next two weeks. According to Boeing, as many as 47 airlines across the world have ordered nearly 900 Dreamliners. The long-range, twin-engine aircraft has four variants, with the longest-range variant capable of flying over 15,000 kilometers non-stop. Air India, that intends to get 14 Dreamliners by March next year, was the second world carrier to have placed orders for this aircraft. However, due to delays in clearing of the agreement further delayed the plane's deliveries to Air India. Japan's All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines and Ethiopian Airways are the only other carriers to possess Dreamliners.
