Floods worsen in Gujarat, Assam

Flood situation remained grim on Saturday in several parts of Gujarat and Assam, bringing normal life to standstill. Commuters in Surat had a harrowing time as they had to wade through waist-deep stagnant water. Incessant rainfall for past few days has worsened the situation, forcing residents to move on rooftops as water has entered several residential colonies. Interacting with media, Sudhir Patel, one of the residents, said, “For the past three-four days, streets have been inundated and water has entered our houses. There is no electricity and no food items are available. Nobody from administration has visited this place.” Meanwhile, the situation in Morigaon district of Assam deteriorated further as continuous rainfall over past two-three days breached embankments, inundating several villages and towns. “People of Majuli face this problem of soil erosion and due to this, they are losing their agricultural land. I would like to request government of Assam and central government to take concrete steps so that these problems should be resolved,” Ranjit Gayan, one of the residents said. Many people have camped on highways in makeshift shelters, and forest officials have shifted animals to upper regions, as floodwater has entered Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Reportedly, the water levels of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries have crossed danger mark at various places in the state.
