China’s next President Xi Jinping has cancelled a meeting with the visiting US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Clinton had been due to meet Vice President Xi Jinping later on Wednesday during her brief visit to Beijing , and the talks were expected to be dominated by China ’s escalating territorial disputes with its neighbours in the South China Sea . “We were informed after 11:00 pm last night by the Chinese side that for unexpected scheduling reasons, the meeting between Vice President Xi and Secretary Clinton is not going to happen today,” the News quoted the official, who requested anonymity, as saying. “We understand from the Chinese side that Vice President Xi’s meetings with the prime minister of Singapore and a Russian official have also been cancelled today,” the official added. According to the report, Clinton has voiced hope that China , which claims virtually all of the South China Sea , will agree to work out a code of conduct on regional territorial disputes, and has encouraged Southeast Asian nations to stand united. Beijing , however, repeatedly said that Clinton ’s hope seems to be more of interference by Washington in the region.
