Raj Thackeray's family hails from Bihar, says Digvijay Singh | Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh has criticized Raj Thackeray's threat to brand Biharis 'infiltrators' and force them out of Maharashtra. He said fishermen are the true inhabitants of Mumbai and that the MNS chief's family is from Bihar.
"The fishermen are the true inhabitants of Mumbai and the rest of the people have come from outside. Raj Thackeray's family also is from Bihar. They came from Bihar, got settled in Dhar, and then they reached Mumbai," said Singh.
"If we look back into history then we can say that Mumbai is a city of fishermen and others have come from outside," he added.
The Congress General Secretary demanded that the incident, which took place in Mumbai, should be investigated
"Around 100 to 150 people came with weapons and were involved in this. The investigation should be done to know by whom it was done. I think there is a conspiracy behind it," he said.
Raj Thackeray had earlier threatened to brand every migrant from Bihar an 'infiltrator'.
"The letter says Mumbai police has to get in touch with the Bihar government before picking up any person from their state. If Mumbai crime branch picks up people from their state without the knowledge of the Bihar police they would face legal action," said Thackeray, while reacting to a media report that Bihar Chief Secretary Navin Kumar has written to Mumbai Police Commissioner expressing displeasure over the arrest of a youth for vandalising the martyr's memorial during Azad Maidan protest on August 11.
"If the Bihar Government tries to become a hurdle in the way of a police investigation, then my party would dub every Bihari in Maharashtra as an infiltrator and would force them to leave the state. The person who desecrated the Amar Jawan memorial was arrested from Bihar . I would like to tell the Bihar chief secretary that because of your state, the crime rate (in Maharashtra ) has gone up," he added.
Mumbai Crime Branch had earlier on Monday arrested Abdul Qadir Mohammed Younus Ansari from Sitamarhi in Bihar for vandalising the Amar Jawan Memorial near Azad Maidan during August 11 rioting at a protest demonstration called against alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar.
