More UK universities could lose foreign students after London Metropolitan | More universities in the UK where students have a poor grasp of English could be
stripped of their right to admit foreign students, after the British Government took the
unprecedented step of revoking London Metropolitan University 's authority to license visas.
At least 2,000 students face being deportation from Britain or being transferred to another
campus after the university in North London was stripped of its Highly Trusted Status (HTS),
and will no longer be allowed to authorise visas.
Ministers said there had been a "serious systemic failure" at the London Met University with
more than a quarter of non-EU students surveyed lacking the correct papers and little
evidence that they had good language skills or were attending courses.
"What we have found here is a serious systemic failure where it appears the university doesn't
have the capacity to be a proper sponsor," The Telegraph quoted Damian Green, UK's
Immigration Minister, as saying.
The move has reportedly infuriated the National Union of Students (NUS) and other student
bodies in the UK , who claimed of "being used as a political football by politicians" in the
country.
"It is disgusting that international students continue to be used as a political football by
politicians who seem either incapable of understanding, or are simply uncaring about the
impact of their decisions on individuals, universities and the UK economy," National Union of
Students (NUS) president Liam Burns said.
A "task force", including representatives from the Higher Education Funding Council for
England , Universities UK, the National Union of Students and the UK Border Agency, is
now trying to help London Met's foreign students find ways to remain in the country, the
paper said.
