Syrian delegation walks out of Tehran NAM Summit

The Syrian delegation walked out of the XVIth Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit here on Thursday, after Egypt ’s President Mohamed Morsi called the Bashar al-Assad-led Government an "oppressive regime" in his speech. According to an Al Jazeera report, addressing representatives of more than 120 countries, Morsi said: "Our solidarity with the struggle of the Syrian people against an oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy is an ethical duty, as it is a political and strategic necessity," adding that "the bloodshed cannot stop without effective interference from all of us." Al Jazeera said in its report that Morsi's comments caused a feeling of unease, especially for Iran , which has close ties with Syria . The crisis in Syria is on the agenda of the NAM Summit, together with the question of human rights and nuclear disarmament. Morsi is the first Egyptian leader to visit Iran since its Islamic revolution in 1979. Diplomatic relations between Cairo and Tehran had broken down after the revolution in Iran over Egypt 's support for the overthrown Shah and its peace agreement with Israel . The NAM Summit ends on Friday. Iran assumes the presidency of the grouping from Egypt.
