Calls to create a vast corpus of scientists for nation-building

Highlighting the role of science and technology in nation building, Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Narinder Nath Vohra has called for creating a vast team of scientists and technocrats, to guide the nation on the path of progress and development. Delivering the keynote address at the five-day long event of the third 'Inspire Science Seminar' here, Vohra said, “I would say that you (students) are lucky. In my time, there were no scholarships. When I did my science after the Partition of India, we didn't have good physics and chemical laboratories. It took many years for good libraries and laboratories to develop in our country after Partition. Today, we are very lucky and it is the responsibility of all the students to make use of this opportunity to pursue your interest in the science stream for which you will get appropriate financial support.” The Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) seminar was hosted by the National Institute of Technology (NIIT). Over 300 students from around 30 districts of the state participated in this interactive seminar with gusto and enthusiasm. Speaking on the occasion, Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University urged the students to opt science as a profession in order to tackle varied problems like avalanche, landslides and earthquakes occurring in the state intermittently. “This is very important programme of the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology to attract young minds to opt science stream because in general, it has been seen for quite sometime, that there is a decline in number of students taking science as their subject. I have attended around four times, the INSPIRE programme, where we find many bright students,” Ahmad said. Saika Sajid, the regional coordinator of the event spoke about the significance of the five-day long seminar. “Through INSPIRE, our main motive is to develop scientific temper among the students. INSPIRE is a direct interaction of students with the scientists. We have many programmes in this INSPIRE internship awareness camp,” Sajid said. Further she stated that the objective of the seminar was to motivate the students to take science stream in their academics and also pursue scientific research in various disciplines across the country. The seminar was held at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC). (ANI)
