Burma announces end to media censorship | Burma has announced an end to censorship of its media. According to the Herald Sun, the move is the latest in a series of extensive reforms by the country’s government.
“Censorship for all local publications is lifted from August 20, 2012,” the report quoted a
statement on the information ministry’s website, as mentioning. According to the Wall Street
Journal, the new US ambassador, Derek Mitchell, to Myanmar also praised the
country for sweeping changes during past one year, since a nominally civilian
government took over from the military regime, which had controlled the nation
for nearly five decades. Myanmar leaders have promised to become more transparent
and push for further changes in the country, the report added. More recently,
Myanmar has released political prisoners and eased constraints on the Internet.
UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon, who had visited the country a few months back,
also felt ‘optimistic’ about Burma ’s future, but had warned of the ‘hard work
ahead’. |
