Kolkata lawyers protest against Mamta’s remarks | Advocates here took to streets on Thursday against the scathing remarks on judiciary made by chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday. Raising slogans against the alleged remarks, Narendra Prasad Gupta, a protesting lawyer, said
her remarks deserve condemnation. “We condemn the remarks made by the chief minister. She has said that the judiciary takes money to pass judgements. We condemn it. We appeal
her to take her words back,” Gupta said. Acting on the plea of senior
counsel Bikash Bhattacharya and a CPI (M) leader for initiation of contempt proceedings
against Mamata Banerjee, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed two national
English dailies and two vernacular news channels to file affidavits within three
weeks on the authenticity of their reports on a speech made by Banerjee on Tuesday.
Meanwhile in New Delhi , lawmaker and leader of Trinamool Congress (TMC) party,
Kalyan Banerjee, defended Banerjee's comments on the contention that she had made
a general comment and there was nothing like contempt for judiciary. “Filing of
contempt petition does not mean that she has committed contempt. Lets see, we
will tell you later on. Two ex-Chief Justices of India 's functions are under
judicial debate. I am not going to say anything now. It is a general comment.
It's not attributed to any individual. It is a comment on the devaluation of the
society whether it's a case of Press or it's a case of judiciary or it's a case
of parliament,” Kalyan Banerjee said. Recently, while addressing a seminar, Mamata
Banerjee is reported to have said that the judiciary these days was passing its
verdicts in lieu of money instead of giving favourable judgements.
