Pak cell phone stores shut down after Taliban warning | Mobile phone dealers in Pakistan 's Khyber Agency have shut down their shops
after the
Pakistan Taliban issued a pamphlet, warning them to stop uploading songs, movies
and pictures to mobile phones. The Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) pamphlet stated that
those associated with mobile phone business should wind up and start another business
as they are committing "un-Islamic acts" like promoting vulgarity by uploading
obscene movies, songs and ring tones in mobile phones, reports The Express Tribune.
"The mobile businesses which are promoting these activities are totally un-Islamic
so the money earned from the business is also 'haram' (forbidden) and must be
given up; those not complying would be dealt with sternly," the pamphlet stated.
An administrative official for the area, Amjid Shinwari, said unidentified TTP
militants issued the pamphlet on August 12. Shop and market owners in the Landi
Kotal area have been threatened with dire consequences if the instructions are
not followed. About two-dozen mobile shops were shut down after the threat and
shopkeepers called upon the government to provide them protection.
