It’s paralympics excitement in UK | Tickets for the London Paralympics have virtually been sold out, with the Games
set to begin in about two weeks. Just a handful of the 2.5 million tickets are
still available, with almost 6,00,000 already sold in the past month alone. Team
GB is sending 288 athletes, including David Weir, 33, who won gold in the 800m
and 1500m in Beijing in 2008, the Daily Express reports. Derek Derenalagi, 34,
who lost both legs as a soldier in Afghanistan, is a medal hope in the discus,
as are wheelchair racers Hannah Cockcroft, 20 (100m and 200m), and Jonnie Peacock,
19. The women’s basketball team is also expected to do well, along with swimmer
Liz Johnson, 27, and double tennis champion Pete Norfolk, 51. The event is set
to begin on August 29. “It’s our turn to show the nation what we can do on home
soil,” British Paralympic Association chief Tim Hollingsworth said. All British
athletes from both Games will be honoured with a parade through London on September 10.
