DMK moves court over cancellation of pro-Lankan Tamil meet | The opposition Dravida Munnettra
Kazhagam (DMK) sought a court's intervention on Saturday over the cancellation
of pro-Sri Lankan Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) meet in Chennai.
The move came after Chennai Police denied permission for the TESO conference,
organised by the chief of the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam M. Karunanidhi, on Sunday.
While interacting with the reporters, DMK lawmaker Kanimozhi said that court's
directions are awaited to decide the next course of action in regard of conducting
TESO conference. "The leader has given a statement in the morning and we will
face this legally, it will be taken to the court, we are waiting for the answer
at around 2- 2:30 pm and after that, I think the party leaders will decide what
to do," said Kanimozhi. The permission was denied by the police on various grounds
among others security being the foremost reason as the matter is sub-judice. Kanimozhi
reasoned bad politics for the cancellation of TESO conference. "We have a lot
of people, who do not want this conference to happen and you now the politics
here," said Kanimozhi. Reportedly, the denial of the permission came after the
Madras High Court directed the police to pass a detailed order on the representation
submitted by the organizers. Both the state and central governments have raised
objections to certain aspects of the conference. According to media reports, the
central government said that they would not allow them to use the word 'Eelam'
in the conference, whereas the state government said that the permission was denied
for holding the event at the chosen venue because it would not accommodate a huge
gathering. TESO is a movement, which fights for the rights of the Tamils of Sri
Lanka - Eelam to acquire justice, equal rights and opportunities through a peaceful
process.
