Rain, thunderstorm damage tent at Ramdev’s fast in Delhi | Heavy rains and a thunderstorm on Saturday damaged
the tented awning that was erected for yoga guru Baba Ramdev protest fast here.
Rain poured through the torn marquee, drenching many of his hapless followers.
Thousands of supporters have joined Baba Ramdev on a three-day hunger strike since
August 9 for enactment of an empowered Lokpal (ombudsman) bill, to bring back
black money stashed in off shore banks and to relieve the Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) of government control. In June 2011, Baba Ramdev and thousands of his followers
went on a mass hunger strike in New Delhi to demand reforms, including death penalty
for corrupt officials. Dozens were injured when the government sent a phalanx
of police with batons and tear gas to break up their peaceful protest. A series
of high-profile scandals has eroded trust and stymied policymaking in Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh’s administration in recent months.
