Hamid Ansari takes oath as Vice-President | Mohammed Hamid Ansari on Saturday became the 14th Vice President of India.
This is his second
consecutive term as the Vice-President, only the second to do so after Dr Sarvepalli
Radhakrishnan. In an almost one-sided contest Ansari got 490 votes out of the
788 valid votes cast in the elections. His opponent, NDA backed candidate Jaswant
Singh, got only 238 votes. He got more votes than he had secured in the 2007 election.
He had the backing by the Congress and its allies in the UPA, including the Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP), DMK and the National Conference.
