The opposition has flayed the UPA-II Government over its failure to table the report on the coal scam. Documents reveal that the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report on the alleged scam into coal block allocation was submitted to the President eleven days before the budget session had ended earlier this year. Despite that, it was not put forward before the Parliament. The revelation had the Opposition fuming, with Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, asking the government “why did a clerical procedure take so long?” Earlier, on the eve of the Monsoon Session the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cornered the government on their delay in tabling the CAG report on the coal scam. “When the house in session, the role of the government is a ministerial role (clerical role), they have to table it in the parliament, not give their opinions on it,” said Jaitley. The President's office is said to have received the coal scam report on May 11, exactly 11 days before a massive uproar in Parliament over the coal gate. That evidence now nails the government lie. While the opposition is now sharpening its attack the government is still avoiding tough questions and has not come out with a strong defence. Union Coal Minister Sri Prakash Jaiswal said: “The CAG report goes to the finance ministry, then Rashtrapati Bhawan, then back to Finance. When was it sent to the Finance Ministry, we have no idea. I can't say whether the Ggovernment delayed it.” Meanwhile, the furore over government's attempt to dodge the tabling of the report is increasing with each passing day. The issue is now threatening to haunt the government during the Monsoon Session of parliament.
