Chief Minister Dikshit pays tribute to ‘Father of Medicine’ Hippocrates in Delhi | Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit
today unveiled a statute of the “Father of Medicine”, Hippocrates, at the Maulana
Azad Institute of Medical Sciences here. Describing the ancient Greek physician
as great, humanitarian and noble man, Dikshit said that physicians of the modern
era should follow and pursue such professional principles in their life and treat
patients with care. Hippocrates, who lived from 460 BC to 370 BC, was free of
superstition and believed disease came from nature as opposed from the Gods. He
is remembered for his impeccable professionalism, discipline and rigorous practice
with noble views. He also wrote about diagnostic methods, diets, the importance
of hygiene, disease prevention through public health and environmental sanitation.
He based his medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body.
He created a holistic medicine and started the first medical school. While referring
to the modern dental institute called MAIDS, Dikshit described it as a centre
of excellence which has been awarded NABH accreditation. She further stated that
her government is keen to develop this institute as a dental university in the
capital. She said the government is looking for a proper place for the expansion
of MAIDS and its up-gradation as a full-fledged university. She also stressed
upon the need of proper dental care as dental diseases results in other major
diseases. Delhi ’s Health Minister Dr. Ashok Walia stated that the life and works
of ‘Hippocrates” would continue to guide and inspire the city and the country’s
medical fraternity.
