Ex-airhostess commits suicide in Delhi |
A former airhostess of the domestic MDLR airline, Geetika Sharma, committed suicide by hanging herself here recently, leaving behind a note accusing the airline’s owner and Minister of State (MoS) in the Haryana Government, Gopal Kanda, of harassing her and forcing her to take the extreme step. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Delhi 's northwestern district, P. Karunakaran, said here on Sunday that
the note mentioned Kanda and another member of the MDLR management, Aruna Chadha.
While the note did mention psychological harassment, the DCP ruled out any mention
of sexual harassment. "It is written here that, "I am ending my life today because
I am shattered from inside. My trust has been broken, and I have been cheated."
It is a very long note that continues on these lines. We have spoken to the family,
they have not told us anything about any sexual assault having taken place," Karunakaran
said. Geetika's brother, Gaurav Sharma, said that Kanda had a reputation of behaving
inappropriately with his female employees, and that he had ruined the deceased's
chance of a job with the Emirates airline, which had given her a call in response
to an application. "Gopal Kanda is known for his inappropriate intentions towards
girls. He had started harassing my sister, when she was an airhostess at MDLR.
She had applied for a job in Emirates as well, for which she got a call and went
to Dubai for her training. But this person, using his influence, sent letters
to the Emirates alleging that she was not of good character, and ruined her chances
of working there," he said. The police said Kanda would be summoned after the
available evidence had been examined. A case for abetment of suicide was lodged
against Kanda and Aruna Chadha under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
