Disaster management mock drill conducted across 11 metro stations in Delhi |
Simultaneous mock drills to check Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s
(DMRC) preparedness to respond to disasters were conducted across eleven metro
stations here on Saturday. The stations where the exercise was conducted are Karol
Bagh, Dwarka Sec-11, Central Secretariat, Pitam Pura, Azadpur, Badarpur, Kirti
Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Shahdara, Noida City Centre and Guru Dronacharya. The drill
began at 11 a.m. and for next fifty minutes, entry to these 11 stations was prohibited
as a part of the standard emergency procedure. Announcements were made in the
Metro trains and stations during this period urging commuters to remain calm.
The drill also assessed the coordination between Metro staff, police, medical
staff and the fire brigade in the event of a disaster. The mock drills were conducted
as part of a joint Mock Drill programme conducted by the Delhi Disaster Management
Authority and the National Disaster Management Authority in Delhi to assess the
preparedness during disasters like earthquakes, terrorist attacks, bomb blasts,
fire etc. A number of mock drills are conducted by the Delhi Metro on a periodic
basis in which scenarios such as terrorist attacks, evacuation from trains and
stations, derailment and fire are simulated.
