Call for dual vote rights for minorities in Pakistan | Federal Public Service Commission chairman Justice (retd) Rana
Bhagwandas has called for dual vote rights for minorities in Pakistan, saying
that minorities should be allowed to exercise their right of franchise in favour
of their candidates against general seats as well as the seats reserved for their
respective communities. Bhagwandas was addressing a seminar entitled organised
by the Ministry of National Harmony, where speakers from different minorities
in Pakistan unanimously demanded the government to give them the right of dual
vote, reports The Nation. "In a separate electoral system, for convenience of
candidates contesting against a minority seat, whole of Pakistan may be divided
according to the number of seats reserved for one community and each part be declared
as one constituency," Bhagwandas said. He also suggested that the number of reserved
seats for minorities should be increased, which is presently 2.92 percent, since
the total population of non-Muslims in the country was 3.72 percent.
