Romney under pressure from party members to release tax records | Pressure is mounting on Republican contender Mitt Romney to release
his tax returns as senior members of his own party called on the multi-millionaire
management consultant to end speculation over his finances. According to The Telegraph,
Robert Bentley, the Republican governor of Alabama , is the latest GOP member
to warn that Romney needsd to silence critics from the Obama campaign over his
use of tax havens and his time at the helm of private equity firm Bain Capital.
“If you have things to hide, then maybe you’re doing things wrong. I think you
ought to be willing to release everything to the American people,” Bentley said.
“The best thing to do is just get everything out in the open and just say, 'hey
I have nothing to hide and I’m going to release my tax returns,” he added. Conservative
commentators said Romney refusal to release more than two years of tax returns,
2010 and 2011, was poisoning the campaign. “He should release the tax returns
tomorrow. It’s crazy,” Bill Kristol, the editor of the conservative Weekly Standard,
said. “You have got to release six, eight, 10 years of back tax returns. Take
the hit for a day or two,” he added. The Obama campaign has redoubled its attacks,
releasing a new campaign ad using a recording of Romney singing an off-key rendition
of “ America the Beautiful” over pictures of a fluttering Swiss flag and palm-fringed
beaches of Bermuda and the Cayman Island.
