Samajwadi Party to back UPA's vice presidential candidate | Samajwadi Party leader Mohan Singh on Thursday made it clear that his political
outfit will support the candidate backed by the ruling UPA coalition for the coveted
post of Vice President of India. "The Samajwadi Party has merged itself with the
UPA for the last 10 years. Our support and understanding can never be with the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or any of its allies. So, the Samajwadi Party will
fall in line with whatever decision is taken by the UPA coalition," said Singh.
When asked whether the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has spoken to any of
the Samajwadi Party leaders with regard to the vice presidential election, Singh
said: "I don't think the Prime Minister has spoken to Deve Gowda because a decision
in this regard will be first taken by the leadership of the Congress, then the
UPA, and then it will be announced formally. Thereafter, the UPA President will
hold discussions with the leaders, whose parties will be lending support from
outside." "Now, the basic talks have even not been held. Congress has not taken
a decision yet and the UPA coalition is meeting on 14th," he added. According
to certain media reports, the Prime Minister has so far spoken to JDS supremo
H.D. Deve Gowda, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, CPM leader Prakash
Karat and CPI's A.B. Bardhan, in an endeavor to garner support for Mohammad Hamid
Ansari for a second term as Vice President. Elections for that office are scheduled
to be held on August 7. The UPA is meeting in New Delhi on July 14 to decide on
who will be their vice presidential candidate. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress
(TMC), which is yet to take a final call on its support to UPA presidential candidate
Pranab Mukherjee, is expected to take part in the ruling alliance deliberations.
