Egypt President annuls dissolution of Islamist-dominated parliament | Egypt first democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi
has issued a decree ordering the country's Islamist-led parliament to reconvene.
The Egyptian parliament was dissolved earlier by the military council, on the
basis of a controversial ruling by the Supreme Court. "President Mohamed Mursi
ordered the reconvening of sessions of the elected parliament," the statement
read by Morsi's close aide Yasser Ali said. It added that another election would
be held within 60 days of a new constitution being approved by the nation in a
public referendum. The charter is not expected to be drafted before the end of
the year, it said. Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who leads the military council,
called an emergency meeting after Morsi issued a direct challenge to the military
by annulling a judical order to disband the Islamic-dominated parliament. The
Supreme Constitutional Court ordered the lower house of parliament dissolved on
June 14 after finding that one-third of the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated house
were party members who had run for seats reserved for independent candidates.
According to the paper, Morsi's announcement is among the first steps he has taken
as president and establishes a clear agenda, as set out in his presidential campaign,
to wrestle power from Egypt 's generals.
