Shortage of trained Olympic security guards worries UK Govt

Britain is concerned about experiencing a potential shortage of security guards during the Olympics, as the private security company that was paid nearly 300 million pounds to guard the games, is yet to train or accredit its security guards in giving error-free protection. According to The Guardian, with three weeks left for the opening ceremony of the Games, only half the guards are prepared for designated security duties. Home Secretary Theresa May summoned senior G4S managers last week and questioned them about the firm's failure to supply enough staff at various venues in the Olympic park in East London . G4S has been contracted to supply 13,700 guards, but still needs to train and accredit about 9,000 guards, according to a security source familiar with the preparations. "We have had some challenges on workforce scheduling this week, which we have discussed with Locog [the organizing committee] and expect to resolve soon," a G4S spokesman said. The firm, however, said it was confident it would have sufficient trained and accredited guards by the time the games begin on July 27.
