US Air Force mulls using women trainers for female cadets after widening sex scandals | The U.S. Air Force is considering moves to hire more
women trainers for female cadets in the wake of widening sex abuses against them
by their instructors. According to Christian Science Monitor, it would be an unprecedented
step for the Air Force, which trains 35,000 cadets a year, 22 percent of whom
are women. The Air Force is considering such a move after a dozen US military
trainers Base in Texas are being probed for alleged sexual misconduct against
young female cadets. General Edward Rice, head of the service's Air Education
and Training Command, said that the Air Force is also considering the possibility
of simply hiring more female trainers as there was a shortage of new female recruits.
Currently, about one in ten Air Force basic training instructors are women. A
separate Air Force-wide survey released in March 2011, one of the most comprehensive
ever undertaken by the US military, found that one in five Air Force women had
been sexually assaulted.
