Schumacher's podium finish in European GP no guarantee for F1 future with Mercedes | Mercedes boss Norbert Haug has said seven times
world champion Michael Schumacher's third place finish in the European Grand Prix
doesn't guarantee an extended Formula One career. Schumacher's third place in
the European Grand Prix was his first podium result since his comeback began in
2010. Haug said Schumacher was 'genuinely pleased' following a disappointing early
season wrecked by reliability problems. F1 pundits have lined up to predict Schumacher
will stay with Mercedes when his contract expires at the end of the year because
he is desperate to win again now the team finally has a truly competitive car,
but Haug denied any such notion. "No, not really. It is a separate story and we
will talk later about it with him,' The Sun quoted Haug, as saying. "Michael is
a great sportsman and this is even more demonstrated in his second career that
he is really open, even to critical questions. He is a really balanced guy who
everybody can look up to because he did not criticize us, did not make any public
noises, and he was genuinely pleased in Valencia ," he added. "He could have said,
'I won 91 races, why should I be happy?' But he was genuinely pleased and it was
wrong to say it was inherited. With one lap to go he was fifth but I can tell
you a lot of stories where he was fifth and things went against him. What we could
see in Valencia was that the genuine speed was there," he said.
