Ecuador offers Assange residency 'to report on dubious US activities' | Ecuador has agreed to offer WikiLeaks founder Julian
Assange residency in a bid to have him report on allegedly dubious American activities, according to a report. A report by the BBC claimed that Ecuador's Deputy Foreign Minister Kintto Lucas said the country was concerned about alleged U.S. practices highlighted by WikiLeaks. "We are open to giving him residency in Ecuador , without
any problem and without any conditions," the report quoted Lucas, as saying. "We
are going to try and invite him to Ecuador to freely present, not only via the
Internet, but also through different public forums, the information and documentation
that he has," he added. According to The Herald Sun, Ecuador 's Foreign Minister
said Assange claims his home country will not support his rights as a 'politically
persecuted citizen'. His plea to Ecuador comes after the UK Supreme Court ordered
Assange be extradited to Sweden , where he is wanted over sex crime allegations.
The Swedish authorities want Assange to answer accusations of raping one woman
and sexually molesting and coercing another in Stockholm in August 2010. Assange,
40, who has denied the charges, insists the sex was consensual and earlier claimed
the charges are politically motivated.
