Maoists set ablaze road construction machinery in Gaya | Maoists set machinery on fire, stalling the construction of a road in their hotbed Gaya district in Bihar . A group of 50-60 rebels, carrying country made weapons, visited the spot late on Monday night, and according to sub-divisional police officer Sonu Kumar Pandey, stalled the development work. Pandey said that an investigation
into the incident is in progress. Deepak Pandey, the manager of the construction
firm, said he had incurred a loss of about Rs.30 lakhs. “The road was supposed
to be finished in another four days, but now, work has been stalled. The machine
is not available and nobody will give it on rent. We can’t buy another one,” Deepak
Pandey added. The rebels have fought for decades in a wide swathe of central and
eastern India , including many resource-rich regions, where tensions run high
between poor farmers and industrial developers. The Maoists say they are fighting
for the rights of millions of landless people. However, the government calls them
India 's main internal security threat and an obstacle to higher growth and more
jobs in Asia 's third-largest economy. Hundreds die annually in the conflict,
although levels of violence have fallen in recent years.
