Bangalore Police arrest French diplomat for alleged rape | Bangalore Police arrested French diplomat Rascal Mazurier, 39, here on Tuesday on a charge
of raping his three-years-and-nine-month-old daughter. Mazurier, who is the deputy
head of chancery in the French Consulate in the city, was taken to a hospital
for a medical examination after which he would be produced in a court. The police
took the diplomat into custody after the French embassy in New Delhi confirmed
that he does not have diplomatic immunity and can be prosecuted, as he holds a
service passport and not a diplomatic passport. Mazurier's wife, Suja Jones, who
is an Indian citizen, had reported the case to the police with the help of a Bangalore-based
NGO. Later, a medical examination confirmed that the daughter was sexually assaulted.
Suja requested the authorities not to let her husband to leave the country till
all legal proceedings were completed and he should not be given the custody of
their children. The couple has three children - a seven year-old son, the victim
and a 20-month-old son. According to a government commissioned survey approximately
53 percent of children in India are subjected to one or other forms of sexual
abuse. The survey was carried out across 13 states of the country where Andhra
Pradesh, Bihar and New Delhi reported the highest incidents of physical and sexual
abuse.
