Arrival of bodies of Indians killed in Nigerian crash delayed

With the family of Mahendra Singh Rathore, the co-pilot of the Boeing that went down in Lagos, Nigeria, awaiting for his body for the past four days, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said that the arrival of the dead body is likely to take time because the remains are not in a condition where they can easily be identifiable. "In the case of the two Indian nationals, our understanding is unfortunately that the remains are not in a condition, where you can easily identify them. So, they will need (go through) a process of examination including DNA testing and matching of that test. This is likely to take time given the facilities there for this sort of a thing," said MEA official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, when asked that the family of the co-pilot is awaiting for his body. Akbaruddin said the MEA is always there to facilitate and try and speed up the process. "Certainly, the MEA is always there to facilitate and try and speed up the process. . But I think we need to understand where we stand in that situation. There was an accident as you said two Indian nationals were involved in this. There was one co-pilot Mahendra Singh Rathore from Rajasthan and there was another Mr. Rijo Eldos from Kerala. Both were unfortunate victims in that accident. My understanding is that our office in Lagos has been in touch with the Governor of Lagos," said Akbaruddin. "The issue is a little bit tricky in the sense that the remains of certain people are not easily identifiable. And so issues of identity remain a factor in dispatch of the bodies back to India in quick time because in those cases where they are easily identifiable they are being sent back right away.....In a normal case, where you identify the body after the post-mortem, it would take a week or so," he added. All 153 people on board were killed when the Dana Airlines plane crashed in Lagos on Sunday. Mahendra Singh Rathore, the co-pilot of the Boeing, and Rijo Eldos, a young computer engineer hailing from Neriamangalam in Kerala's Idukki District, were the two Indians killed in the plane crash in Lagos . Families of the two deceased have been in touch with the officials of Dana Airlines in Nigeria to release their bodies.
