Ramdev, Anna begin joint fast against graft in Delhi | Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and veteran social activist Anna Hazare have begun their
daylong fast against corruption at the Parliament Street here. Both Baba Ramdev and Hazare,
who will highlight the demand for the return of black money stashed away by Indians abroad
and for a stronger Lokpal Bill during their fast, visited
Mahatma Gandhi's memorial at Rajghat earlier this morning. The two spent some
time meditating at Rajghat. Baba Ramdev also visited the nearby Shahid Park.
Baba Ramdev earlier today said if the government did not respond, the movement
against corruption would intensify in the days to come. "After 3 June, the movement
will intensify and strengthen, and the future programme and strategy would be
announced at the Jantar Mantar," he said. Baba Ramdev demanded that the government
should follow the steps suggested by him to bring back black money stashed away
abroad. "Not just millions but, billions of people will join this movement. By
evening, rallies and candle light vigils will be carried out in 647 districts
across the country, and billions of people will take to the streets to ask the
government to declare black money as the nation's treasure and initiate an effective
procedure to bring it back. We have submitted in written to the honourable Prime
Minister, seven ways of bringing back the black money. The government should follow those
steps," he said. Baba Ramdev further pointed out that the economic slowdown
and depreciation in the value of the rupee is weakening the country's image globally.
"The country is reeling under the impact of economic slowdown, the value of money
is depreciating, the growth rate is slowing down, and all these things, are weakening
the image of India across the world. On one hand, the farmers are suffering, on
the other hand, there are no good schools, colleges and universities available
for children and the youth are unemployed," Baba Ramdev said. "These people will
get their right only when the stashed away black money is brought back. So, we
request the people across country to participate in this fight of bringing back
the black money," he added.
