Haryana police intensify hunt for teenager who fled Australia after killing man | Haryana Police has reportedly ramped up the hunt for a teenager who killed a man
in Melbourne nearly four years ago, before fleeing the country. Police has started
tapping family members' phones and have offered a reward for information leading
to the arrest of Puneet Puneet, 19. Despite repeated entreaties from the Australian
and Victorian governments, and police knowing Puneet's family's address in the
northern city of Panchkula , he has remained elusive to local authorities. Deputy
Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar said that they have intensified their hunt
for the fugitive killer after the Australian high commission forwarded another
request two months ago, The Age reports. "We have conducted raids, put his family
members' phones under observation and we are analysing their every movement,"
the paper quoted Kumar, as saying. "We placed fresh newspaper advertisements and
announced an appropriate reward. We are putting in every effort to trace him.
Once caught, we will hand him over to the Australian Government," he added. In
October 2008, Puneet lost control of the car he was driving and hit students Dean
Hofstee and Clancy Cloker. Hofstee, who was also aged 19, was killed. Puneet has
maintained he was not driving that fast and swerved to avoid a cat on the road.
He publicly apologised and vowed never to drive again, describing the crash as
''the worst day of my life''. But after pleading guilty to culpable driving, he
was awaiting sentencing when he fled Australia on a passport borrowed from a friend.
