Court orders security after attack on Hindu temple in Peshawar |
The chief justice of Peshawar High Court has condemned the vandalism on a Hindu temple and ordered an inquiry into the incident. Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan took serious notice of Sunday night's vandalism
on the Guru Goraknath Temple in Peshawar and directed the Capital City Police
Officer (CCPO), Imtiaz Altaf, to enhance security at all places of worship frequented
by the minorities. According to The Express Tribune, he also ordered District
Coordination Officer Siraj Ahmad Khan and CCPO Altaf to conduct inquiries into
the attack and submit their report by May 25. It maybe recalled that unidentified
men had broken into the temple, smashed a holy figurine and burnt down scriptures
and images of Hindu deities on May 20. The Hindu community had abandoned the temple
after partition of the subcontinent in 1947 and no rituals had take place inside
for decades because of a land dispute. Last year, the high court handed over the
temple's custody to the Hindu community.
