'Economy is deteriorating rapidly', says Yechury on UPA-II's three years | Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)
leader Sitaram Yechury on Monday hit out at UPA II as it completed three years
in office, saying the government had failed to curb corruption, inflation and
unemployment. "From both sides, burdens on the people have been mounting and on
every front we find that this has been a government that is in a state of drift
and not a single decision has been taken that can alleviate the burdens from the
people. On the price front, inflation continues to be rampant, the economy is
deteriorating rapidly," he said on the UPA anniversary day. Yechury further demanded serious effort to quantify
illicit funds stashed abroad by Indians and confiscate the accounts of the culprits.
"All undisclosed assets of the Indian located abroad should be confiscated, if
you are serious about tackling black money and getting back this money to the
country those who disclose it, those who by legal means have generated this amount
they are entitled to it," said Yechury. "So, we are not saying crackdown on them,
but those which are undisclosed all these assets must be confiscated or nationalised
by this government. That is the only way we can deal with black money," he added.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M. Karunanidhi on his part said these three
years have exposed several shortcomings within the functioning of the government.
"UPA has many deficiencies, so no mark will be given," he told media in Chennai.
Karunanidhi also refused to attend the dinner being hosted by Prime Minister Dr.
Manmohan Singh tonight to mark the UPA Government's three years in office. "I
am not going, as they have not invited me," he said, when asked whether he would
be attending the dinner party. Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati
refused to comment over the completion of the term by the UPA Government. "The
UPA Government has completed the term of three years, let the report about the
performance of the government come. Our party will comment on it after carefully
going through the report. It is not correct to say anything in advance," she said.
