UPA II highlights its achievements on completing three years | The Congress-led United Progressive
Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre, which completed its eighth year in power
today, claimed that India is now second fastest growing large economy in the world
with a GDP growth of 6.9 percent. In releasing its list of achievements and accomplishments,
the government also claimed that per capita income in the country is increasing
constantly - 14 percent in last year and added that private consumption had risen
to .8 percent as people have more money to spend. Commenting on inflation, which
has deeply hit the common man's pockets, the UPA-II said it had been brought under
control this year from a high of 10 percent to the present 7.5 percent, and added
that food inflation too had been arrested this year to eight percent on 52 week
average from 17 percent last year. The ruling alliance also informed that the
Central Government had given grants to States and Union Territories to the tune
of Rs 32,900 crores. Among the other highlights mentioned were: 1. Allocation
on Social Service Sector increased significantly by 31226 crores. 2. Opening up
of 50 lakh new Anganwadi Centres where more than 97 million children benefit.
3. Issue of over 12 crore job cards under MNREGA, meaning that one in five houses
are now covered by the scheme. 4. Drop in unemployment on every parameter since
UPA took charge. 5. Agriculture credit increased to more than 1 lakh crore rupees
in one year. 6. A record amount of food-grain stock (544 lakh tons). 7. Power
generation capacity increased by 20502 MW in a year, thereby reaching new record
levels. 8. Nearly 8,000 km highway projects were awarded. 9. Foreign Direct Investment
in infrastructure is stronger. 10. Total Foreign Direct Investment increased by
over 55 percent in the last financial year. 11. Nearly 100 million new phone connections
were allotted in fiscal 2011-12 12. More than 22.39 million people now have Internet
and broadband connections. The UPA regime further informed that violence in Naxal
affected areas is on the decline, and also pointed out that there has been a significant
decline in violence in Jammu and Kashmir . " Jammu and Kashmir has seen significant
decline in violence and more than 80 percent people came out to vote in Panchayat
elections," the government said. With regard to progress in the field of tourism,
the government said more foreign tourists are coming to India . Tourism arrivals
had risen from 5.78 million in 2010-11 to 6.29 million in 2011-12, and added that
revenue from tourism had steadily increased from 14.1 billion dollars to 16.5
billion dollars. "We pledge to continue our efforts for inclusive growth witnessed
in the last eight years," the government said.
