Foodgrains rot, authorities plan to sell it to breweries | Organisational apathy from Punjab Agro
Foodgrains Corporation and lack of storage space has resulted in the loss of more
two hundred thousands of sacks of wheat grains here, and the authorities are now
planning to sell the rotting grains to breweries as buyers in the market have
refused to buy the rotten wheat. "More than two hundred thousands sacks of wheat
have come here and rest of the sacks are placed in godowns and we are expecting
75000 sacks more," said Punjab Agro Foodgrains Corporation, Prabhjot Singh. Singh
further said that the rotten wheat grains would soon go under the hammer. "Here
you can see 50,000 sacks are placed, which is totally rotten and seniors are talking
over the issue," said Singh. According to the Agriculture Ministry estimates,
the country registered a record 252.6 million tones of food grain production in
2011-12. Despite record production, the cost of flour has been steadily rising
due to improper storage, resulting in mass rotting of foodgrains.
