Arsenal's up and down 2011-2012 season the ‘strangest,’ says Arsene Wenger | Arsene Wenger has described the up and down 2011-12 season of football as the “strangest” since his debut in English football as manager16 years ago. Arsenal lost four out of
their first seven games, including an 8-2 humiliation at the hands of Manchester
United. However, they managed to recover, sufficient enough to go into today’s
last game against West Bromwich Albion where if they gain victory, they would
be third in the Premier League rankings and be eligible for qualification for
the Champions League qualification next season. “It has been the strangest because
there were changes throughout the season, it looked first of all for us like we
were battling relegation and then at the last game of the season we are battling
for a Champions League position,” The Telegraph quoted Wenger, as saying. “ Manchester
City looked like they would cruise easily to the league and then suddenly they
had lost it, and nobody understood quite why,” he added. The Holloway club manager
noted that it was Robin van Persie ‘who kept the team above water’ and took the
club to victory in most of the matches. “The team has grown in quality during
the season and the results in the second half have been much stronger. Overall,
the exceptional season of Robin van Persie kept us above water. Scoring more than
30 goals is something exceptional,” he said.
