Russian police cracks down on anti-Putin protesters |
Russian riot police reportedly launched a crackdown
on tens of thousands of people gathered to protest against Vladimir Putin's return
to the presidency on Monday. The clashes began after a large group of protesters
including opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the anti-corruption blogger, Sergei
Udaltsov, staged a sit-down protest near Bolotnaya Square . Crowds chanted 'Shame!
Shame!' as police arrested over 250 people including Navalny, Udaltsov, and former
deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov, The Telegraph reports. Some protesters had
reportedly attacked officers, pulling off their helmets and throwing them in the
Moscow River . According to the paper, police were singling out protesters and
belabouring them with truncheons before dragging them away. A small number in
the agitated crowd retaliated by throwing chunks of asphalt. Police put the crowd
at 8,000, but the number appeared to be much higher, the paper said.
