Presidential polls: Mamata Banerjee meets Sonia Gandhi | West Bengal Chief
Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee met Congress President
Sonia Gandhi here on Thursday and is believed to have discussed the upcoming election
for the office of President of India. Banerjee, however, refused to reveal any
details of her meeting with the UPA chairperson. "Nothing special. I came for
a courtesy meeting. Actually, I came to enquire about her (Sonia Gandhi's) health.
Nothing else," she told the meeting outside Sonia Gandhi's official 10, Janpath
residence here. Banerjee whose Trinamool Congress, is a key ally of the UPA Government
at the Centre, also met Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulalaym Singh Yadav later
today to discuss the vital issue over the presidential candidate. The Congress
has shortlisted its choices to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President
Hamid Ansari. The election is scheduled for June. Current incumbent Pratibha Devisingh
Patil's term ends on July 25 this year. She was sworn-in as the 12th President
of India on July 25, 2007. The President is the constitutional head of the country
and also the supreme commander of the armed forces.
