14 killed, over 100 injured in Thailand blast | At least 14 people have reportedly been killed and
over 100 wounded in a series of deadly explosions in a southern province of Thailand on Saturday. The first batch of explosives planted inside a parked truck ripped
through a busy area of restaurants and shops in Yala city, said district police
chief Kritsada Kaewchandee. About 20 minutes later, as people gathered at the
blast site, a second car bomb exploded, causing most of the casualties. According
to The Herald Sun, 11 people were killed and 110 wounded by the second blast.
Pramote Promin, deputy spokesman of a regional security agency, described it as
'the worst attack in the past few years.' "The suspected insurgents were targeting
people's lives. They (chose) a bustling commercial area, so they wanted to harm
people," the report quoted Promin, as saying. According to the report, another
blast on Saturday hit a high-rise hotel in the city of Hat Yai , in the nearby
province of Songkhla . Regional police chief Jakthip Chaijinda said the Hat Yai
incident 'is likely related to what happened in Yala and might have been plotted
by the same group of insurgents.'
