PP Govt should focus on eliminating corruption: Nawaz Sharif | The Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) will not support the federal government on the issue of the Reformed General Sales Tax (RGST), party chief Nawaz Sharif has said. Addressing a public gathering in
Sheikhupura, Nawaz said the Pakistan People's Party-led government should focus
on eliminating corruption instead of increasing taxes, the Dawn reports. He said
the PML-N sided with the government on the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award
and the 18th Amendment, but it will not support it on RGST. The party will not
allow the government to increase the burden on the masses, he added. Nawaz said
that a revolution was needed to combat the troubles faced by the people, and to
fight unemployment, poverty and injustice. It is noteworthy that the US Coordinator
for Economic and Development Assistance to Pakistan, Robin Raphel, had said last
month that the United States and donor agencies wanted Pakistan to honour its
commitments on new tax measures. "Pakistan now has an agreement with the IMF which
calls for this reformed GST and since it is our position that countries, whether
Pakistan or anybody else, should live up to their international agreements, we
would like to see this legislation passed," Raphel had said.
